A new census estimates that only 25 to 34 wild Amur leopards remain—at least 66 fewer than are needed to ensure survival, experts say.
Weighing in at about 55 to 130 pounds (25 to 59 kilograms), the large cat once flourished along the Korean Peninsula, in the Russian Far East, and in northeastern China. But habitat fragmentation and the hunting of the leopard and its prey have eviscerated wild populations, conservationists say.
One of 34 Remaining Rare Leopards was found killed on April 20.

A Chinese article describing the tragedy of South China tiger, mentioning the difficulty of preserving the species because of the little population that is remaining of them. And those that are raised in zoos have lost their true nature. There is some hope left to release some back to the wild to strengthen their gene pool or maybe by interbreeding it with that of other similar tigers such as the Indo-Chinese race.

The birth of little Tiger Woods Jr. marks the first time one of the animals has been born outside China, according to the Save China’s Tigers organization. Organization founder Li Quan said in a statement to Reuters news service:
“It is truly a historic event, because it is the first time that a South China Tiger has been born outside of China. Only around 60 South China Tigers exist in captivity and less than 30 survive in the wild.”
