The birth of little Tiger Woods Jr. marks the first time one of the animals has been born outside China, according to the Save China’s Tigers organization. Organization founder Li Quan said in a statement to Reuters news service:

“It is truly a historic event, because it is the first time that a South China Tiger has been born outside of China. Only around 60 South China Tigers exist in captivity and less than 30 survive in the wild.”

A Chinese article describing the tragedy of South China tiger, mentioning the difficulty of preserving the species because of the little population that is remaining of them. And those that are raised in zoos have lost their true nature. There is some hope left to release some back to the wild to strengthen their gene pool or maybe by interbreeding it with that of other similar tigers such as the Indo-Chinese race.

Rare Chinese tiger spotted for first time in decades.

Experts have confirmed a photograph taken on October 3 by a farmer in Shaanxi province was of a young wild South China tiger, the most critically endangered of all tiger subspecies, Xinhua news agency said.

The South China Tiger is one of six remaining tiger subspecies. Three subspecies, the Bali, Java, and Caspian tigers have all become extinct since the 1940s, according to the fund.

The tiger’s traditional habitat is southern and central China.
